PUBLIC EMPLOYEE UNION BENEFITS/PRIVATE SECTOR BENEFITS

NOTE: Contracts vary. Figures “general” but apply to Teachers, Police, Fire, prison guards, etc. Teachers work 9 months with all holidays and weekends off. Police, fire, etc. get OT if work holidays.

PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYEE – SALARY – VARIES
PUBLIC UNION EMPLOYEES – SALARY – 42% TO 48% HIGHER THAN COMPARABLE PRIVATE JOB

PRIVATE SECTOR – VACATION – 10 DAYS
PUBLIC UNION – VACATION – 14 DAYS (to start)

PRIVATE SECTOR – SICK DAYS – 5 DAYS
PUBLIC UNION – SICK DAYS – 14 DAYS

PRIVATE SECTOR – PAID HOLIDAYS – 8 DAYS
PUBLIC UNION – PAID HOLIDAYS – 14 DAYS

PRIVATE SECTOR – PERSONAL DAYS – ZERO
PUBLIC UNION – PERSONAL DAYS – VARIES 5+

PRIVATE SECTOR – OVERTIME – ZERO
PUBLIC UNION – OVERTIME – LOTS (some can call in sick, then work different shift for OverTime. I’d call in sick everyday, wouldn’t you?)

PRIVATE SECTOR – HEALTH INSURANCE – PAY 1/2 INSURANCE, CO-PAYS, WHAT INS DOESN’T COVER.
PUBLIC UNION – HEALTH INSURANCE – MOST PAY ZERO FOR LIFE

PRIVATE SECTOR – PENSIONS – PAY 1/2 IRA MONTHLY. (If loses value or not enough, sorry)
PUBLIC UNION – PENSIONS – MANY PAY ZERO, COVERS LIFETIME (if loses value, taxpayers must pay)

PRIVATE SECTOR – RETIREMENT – 67 (FOR NOW)
PUBLIC UNION – RETIREMENT – FOR MANY 55

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – WORK A LOT OF OVERTIME LAST THREE YEARS TO SPIKE PENSION, RETIRE WITH 100% OR MORE OF SALARY PLUS COST OF LIVING INCREASES FOR LIFE.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – CAN BUY FIVE YEARS OF “AIR TIME” (TIME NOT WORKED) TO SPIKE PENSION.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – “DROP CONTRACT” CAN DRAW PENSION FIVE YEARS BEFORE RETIRING WHILE ON FULL SALARY AND BENEFITS.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – AFTER RETIRING CAN BE REHIRED AS “CONSULTANT” AT $60+ AN HOUR.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – PRISON GUARDS PAID FROM WHEN THEY EXIT CAR TO WHEN ENTER CAR TO GO HOME.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNION – SAVE VACATION DAYS, HOLIDAYS, PERSONAL DAYS, SICK DAYS AND GET PAID FOR NOT USING THEM. SOME HAVE RECIEVED SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS/AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE.

PRIVATE SECTOR – CAN’T DO THAT
PUBLIC UNIONS – MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DUES USED TO ELECT DEMOCRATS THAT THEN “OWE” UNIONS (GOOD FOR UNIONS/BAD FOR TAXPAYERS). THAT WOULD BE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST IN PRIVATE SECTOR. TAXPAYERS HAVE NO SEAT AT THE TABLE BUT MUST PAY. WHERE IS EQUAL PROTECTION?

PRIVATE SECTOR – 12% PLUS UNEMPLOYMENT, NO RAISES, BENEFITS CUT, IRA’S LOST VALUE.
PUBLIC UNION – NO UNEMPLOYMENT OR CUTS IN BENEFITS.

PRIVATE SECTOR – JOB SECURITY – ZERO (can be fired anytime for any reason)
PUBLIC UNION – JOB SECURITY – VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIRE. 167 TEACHERS PAID TO STAY HOME. CHARGES SERIOUS ENOUGH TO KEEP OUT OF CLASSROOMS BUT YEARS AND YEARS PASS AND STILL ON FULL PAY AND BENEFITS.

PRIVATE SECTOR – WORK ETHIC – DO BETTER, WORK HARDER GET PAID MORE.
PUBLIC SECTOR – WORK ETHIC – (from union POV. I know many union employees value their work and work hard). UNIONS DON’T ENCOURAGE “HARD WORK”, WANT AS MANY WORKERS (UNION DUES) AS POSSIBLE. PAY AND BENEFITS BASED ON LONGEVITY NOT MERIT. LAST ONE HIRED, FIRST ONE FIRED (IF LAYOFFS).

MORE THAN 5000 PEOPLE IN CALIFORNIA ARE DRAWING OVER $100,000 A YEAR IN PENSIONS. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE DRAWING $100k PENSIONS HAS INCREASED 230% IN LAST TWO YEARS.

UNIONS are demanding increasing taxes to continue paying union employees these outragous and unfair salaries and pensions. Not willing to give an inch. Private sector hurting. Gov. Brown says we have to “share sacrifice”. He says he cut $12 billion out of the budget (smoke and mirrors) and we (taxpayers) have to pay increases in our taxes to make up the other $12 billion. What “shared sacrifices” are unions making? Zero. Public employee salaries/benefits/pensions are the main reason we have a deficit. They take up a greater and greater percentage of the budget every year with less and less left for public services. They are responsible but unwilling to sacrifice anything. Furlough days were traded for personal/ vacation/sick days and ended up making them money. The “shared sacrifice” shouldn’t come from the taxpayers (already paying highest taxes in country), it needs to come from the public unions.
