At some point Liberals throw this accusation at me when I point out how much Obama is spending. I find it so amusing. It’s such a good example of the lack of critical thinking. If they think Bush spent too much, how do they think that justifies Obama spending ten times more?
I tell them, I was screaming. I was so upset that I actually re-registered as an Independent. The second Bush term is what got me involved in politics. I was appalled at much of what the Republicans were doing. I expected when Republicans were in control fiscal responsibility would be the order of the day. I was sadly mistaken. I couldn’t believe the Medicare part D bill. It was written by drug and insurance lobbyists. It was so convoluted no one understood it. I wondered then, since we’re buying in large quantities, why couldn’t we just get an across the board discount? I realized the bill was written so that none of the parties took too big a hit. It was more about them than the consumer. I couldn’t believe Republicans supported this huge socialist program.
What really sent me over the edge was Bush’s support for Amnesty for illegal aliens. Now let me make it clear from the start that I am 100% FOR “legal immigration”. The United States has the most generous immigration policy in the world. We allow twice as much “legal” immigration as ALL the rest of the countries in the world combined. Plus we import over 300 thousand H1-B visa workers a MONTH. Our immigration policy, as well as the policies of every other country in the world, has considered the needs of the country. We want to add educated, skilled workers to our country. We welcome legal immigration. Illegal immigration is a different story.
I’ve lived in California most of my life and I’ve watched this glorious state slowly being turned into an annex of Mexico. We never had entire cities that didn’t speak English. Entire schools where neither the students or their parents spoke English. I became more and more aware that even though the 1986 Amnesty Bill called for securing the border, our borders were NOT secure and our immigration laws were not being enforced and I became more and more alarmed and more and more angry. The financial burden to the taxpayer is enormous. In order for businesses to have “cheap labor”, the savings to them became a financial burden on the taxpayer in increased costs of schooling, welfare, healthcare and crime. I watched illegals being exempt from our laws and finally being rewarded for breaking the law. It doesn’t matter if you think the law they are breaking is serious or not. It IS the law and in order for them to stay in this country they break even more laws. Identity theft, forgery, driving without a license or insurance, working without a green card, etc. Legal immigrants are required to learn about our laws and speak our language. Not so illegal aliens. I became outraged that illegal aliens were not being held to the rule of law but American citizens were.
I had never been politically active. I had never written a letter to my Representative or a letter to the editor. I thought I’m only one person, who cares what I think? But I had to do something so I wrote my first letter…..and I went to the top. I wrote to President Bush, thinking he probably doesn’t know how bad it has become in California (now don’t laugh). I wrote to him about why Amnesty was wrong and since the 1986 Amnesty had resulted in more illegal immigration not less, there was no reason to believe another Amnesty would have different results. I got back a form letter telling me how the illegal aliens just wanted a better life for their families. I can understand and sympathize with that but so are LEGAL immigrants and they are playing by the rules and waiting as long as 15 years to immigrate. How is it fair to legal immigrants to allow illegal aliens to break the law and be rewarded for it? I started writing, calling, e-mailing, faxing Washington, D.C. and calling them on their support of Amnesty. What I learned is that I CAN make a difference. Millions of “me’s” did the same and we stopped Amnesty.
So, my Liberal friends, explain to me why, if I was upset with Bush spending $5 Trillion in 8 years, I’d be OK with Obama spending $6 Trillion in 3 years? I’m not OK with either party growing government. That’s why I got involved with the Tea Party movement. We have made a difference. And it is the Tea Party that has made the Republican establishment understand that we are serious about” limited Constitutional Government and fiscal responsibility”. Now, we have to make sure they don’t forget.
