SHOUTED DOWN IN SANTA MONICA

I expected no less from the Soviet Socialist Republic of Santa Monica. Knowing no opposing opinions would be allowed, I drove to Santa Monica for a talk on the current status of global warming and climate disruption given by the “Climate Reality Project”. I came prepared but I admit I had butterflies in my stomach. In the past I would never have spoken to an unfriendly audience. Now I do it all the time but it still makes me nervous.

It’s interesting that the group sponsoring this talk was named, “Climate Reality Project” considering reality was absent from the presentation. The audience was sparse, I’d say under a hundred and consisted of mostly elderly, birkenstock wearing hippies. A sweet white haired, grandmotherly woman named Sharon Markenson gave the prepared program. She used a glossily produced slide show that went through all the claims we’ve heard from Alarmists for the last 20 years starting with the claim that 97% of scientists say man is causing global warming. It covered the entire litany of claims, melting polar caps, droughts, flooding (apparently, the ocean is rising in some places but not others), extreme storms, extreme forest fires (ignoring that the government shut down logging and won’t allow the clearing of dead wood, not to mention tearing up roads fire trucks need to get into the forests, but I digress). She even showed Gore’s graph of CO2 and temperature following the same trajectory (again neglecting to mention CO2 HAS increased while temperature hasn’t). She repeated the claim that this year was the hottest year ever.

I was amused that several times the presentation included quotes from Republican politicians (taken out of context and not referring to global warming) and
for the only video of an actual scientist, Ms Markenson, made a point of describing the scientist as an evangelical, Republican. The scientist only said there was more humidity now than in the past. I’ve not heard that claim before so I don’t know if it’s true or not but she didn’t say man was causing it. Apparently, Ms. Markenson believes if an evangelical, Republican gives them a quote they can use, it’s compelling evidence.

Ms. Markenson went on to explain how solar and wind were so much better than fossil fuels (once again, neglecting to mention they are only affordable now because they are subsidized). She said we might wonder why America should be restricting it’s use of fossil fuels when China wasn’t, so she explained how they are using more and more solar power (ignoring that between China and India they are building one coal plant a day). She said of course America should set the example (example of what? How to destroy an economy?). She then explained how carbon taxes would give families carbon credits and they might not even use them all, so it would make energy cheaper (like Obamacare made health insurance cheaper). One of the funniest quotes from a Republican politician she used was, “is it a tax if the government doesn’t keep it”? I actually laughed out loud. What tax does the government keep? Our government has run up a nearly $20 Trillion deficit. I’m not aware of the government socking away any of our taxes. She was trying to make the point that if the government collected carbon taxes and gave families carbon credits it would be a zero sum game. Maybe she doesn’t realize there would be a huge, highly paid bureaucracy, that doesn’t exist now, to service this lovely scheme.
She then told the audience they should contact their representatives to support a carbon tax. She also said the “Climate Reality Project” had trained her to give these informative talks and if anyone wanted to get that training to contact the people at the table outside. She ended the slide show with a picture of her three grandsons and one granddaughter and said she was doing this for them. She finished and asked for questions or comments. I raised my hand and was given the microphone.

I started by saying I was a mother and grandmother too and I loved the planet as much as anyone in the room. I said I was sure she had the best of intentions but she was mistaken. I said I could go through her presentation and argue against each claim but I doubted they would give me equal time so I’d address the most easily disproved. I said the claim made by an Australian blogger that 97% of scientists agree man is causing global warming was debunked almost as soon as it was made, but it is repeated nevertheless. I held up a list of the scientists just in California that disagree. I fanned out the 28 pages and showed the audience. I then showed them a printout from the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works website on the 650 current and former IPCC scientists who Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims.

I quoted from Noble Prize winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever, “I am a skeptic….Global warming has become a new religion”. And IPCC scientist Dr. Kimminori Itoh, award winning PhD in environmental physical chemist, “Warming fears are the worst scientific scandal in history…..When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists”. At this point people were shouting at me. They said, “What is your question?”. I said, “Science is based on skepticism, many things that were considered “settled science” have been proven wrong because skeptics kept asking questions. Why won’t you listen to skeptics?

As the room erupted in shouts at me, the microphone was taken (grabbed) from me and I sat down. Ms. Markenson said she had a scientist who could answer me. A white haired man in jeans and a plaid shirt stood next to her. I was expecting him to argue with me but all he did was ask me if I could give him the sources of my claims. I said I certainly could and would. A man behind me asked if he could see the list of California scientists. I showed it to him. He carefully looked at the first few pages and handed it back. The questions that followed from the audience were all from believers and I doubted they’d give me the microphone again, so I got up to leave. The “scientist” quickly came over to me and asked for my email address so he could get my sources. As we were talking another man came up and asked for a copy of the “list”. I told him he could google it. I said it was the “Petition Project”. He said, “Oh, they put anyone who took a class in science on it. I said, “Not true. I’ve met the scientists who circulated the petition and every name was vetted. All you have to do is click on a name and it tells what degrees they have.” He hurumphed his way back to his seat and I was asked to leave because I was being disruptive. I considered that high praise. There is nothing more entertaining than the tolerant Left.

I admire your passion and tenacity trying to talk sense to those who have none (and wouldn’t know what to do with it except disregard it). Global warmers are nuts (nothing brings to mind an uglier image than an aging hippie). On another topic, but the same sort of idea, had a chat with a liberal friend–she’s in her mid 60s, pro union and lifelong Democrat voter–about Jerry Brown’s policy of releasing prisoners (he stated it was inhumane to keep men housed in “gymnasium-like quarters, sleeping on cots,” to which I respond, “It’s PRISON! These men gave up being treated humanely by doing something to become incarcerated.”) My friend said that Jerry Brown told the voters of CA that if they wanted more taxes, he would raise them to build more prisons, so the only alternative was to let these lawbreakers free. I laughed because I didn’t think Jerry Brown EVER turned down a chance to raise our taxes. I googled her claim and found that Brown ordered the release of prisoners (a Federal order to reduce overcrowding) and cited saving money for the beleaguered resident “turnips”–but the costs of keeping prisoners has risen to $64K a year, up from $49K five years ago. (Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-california-prison-budget-insight-idUSKBN0UK0J520160106) So even when Brown talks about saving money, he can’t deliver. No better at that than the global warmers.

  2. Although I know the Left will dismiss anything they hear that they don’t like without researching to see if it’s true or not…..in fact they don’t seem to care if it’s true or not, but I think it’s important to tell them the truth anyway. It might make someone in the room think and that’s a good thing.

We all know Gov Jerry spends our tax money on more and more benefits for illegals and refugees to keep the Democrat majority, as well as outrageous salaries and pensions for state union employees, instead of the infrastructure that the taxes are supposed to go to. We have this water shortage because he stopped all infrastructure in the early 70’s during his first run as Gov even though our population was projected to double. The Left doesn’t care if they destroy cities and states as long as they keep their majority.

It might be time for you to spend time at Stanford or UCLA and earn a degree so you can be a global warming scientist. Facts matter. Your opinions matter. Try a little harder to separate the two.

  4. I actually have two UCLA scientists on the board of my foundation. We have an international conference every year and bring scientists, experts and world leaders from around the world. You are correct, facts matter and I get mine from the source.

    • Not hard at all if given ALL the information. The NYTimes is as Progressive as it gets. Do you actually think I haven’t heard all the claims from “Alarmists”? I know scientists who are in these fields of study, do you? There are many phenomenon that contribute to warming and cooling cycles if man has any effect it is minimal. I had a very long communication with Al Barnett, the “scientist” who wanted my sources. He wasn’t a scientist, nor did he have a PhD. He was an engineer. I sent him a flood of information that he didn’t take time to read. I find that typical of “Alarmists”. At this time I’ve been challenging two of the “Alarmists” who appeared on th Jimmy Kimmel show and said we needed to “F**king” believe them (because polls show the public doesn’t consider GW a problem…..because none of the scary claims have come happened). I have asked them to participate I. A public debate with two skeptic scientists. I told them it would be to their advantage and would help put the issue to bed. They refuse because it’s a FRAUD! and they can’t prove their claims. You have MUCH more to fear from the tyrannical regulations, loss of free speech and loss of private property than you have to fear from Global Warming.

    • Gary Aminoff says:

No, it isn’t. It is easy to argue. There is nothing in that article that indicates that global warming (or cooling) is man-caused. The earth has been warming and cooling since it was formed. This is due to solar activity. When the earth is closer to the sun and there is high solar activity we get global warming. Conversely, when the earth is further from the sun, and solar activity decreases we get global cooling. This is known by all scientists. Man has minimal, if any, effect on climate change. Governments want people to think that actions of humans can effect climate change, when, in fact, actions by humans have hardly any effect on climate change. They do that so that they have another way to control their people. Thinking that sea levels are rising, therefore, it is caused by humans, is called post hoc propter hoc thinking, and is a logical fallacy.

  5. JoAnn says:

This is for your consideration. It is not intended to start an argument or debate. These things are actually happening now!

Federal scientists have documented a sharp jump in this nuisance flooding — often called “sunny-day flooding” — along both the East Coast and the Gulf Coast in recent years. The sea is now so near the brim in many places that they believe the problem is likely to worsen quickly. Shifts in the Pacific Ocean mean that the West Coast, partly spared over the past two decades, may be hit hard, too.

These tidal floods are often just a foot or two deep, but they can stop traffic, swamp basements, damage cars, kill lawns and forests, and poison wells with salt. Moreover, the high seas interfere with the drainage of storm water.

In coastal regions, that compounds the damage from the increasingly heavy rains plaguing the country, like those that recently caused extensive flooding in Louisiana. Scientists say these rains are also a consequence of human greenhouse emissions.

    • I find it so amusing that people think they can convince me that some article or event is going to show me I’m wrong. You are not a scientist. Do you personally know any scientists who study the various fields that cover this issue? First of all, the poles are not melting. There is more ice in the Antarctic. The artic ice is mostly over water. When ice melts is has LESS volume NOT more. We have had flooding MANY times in history. I live on the coast. The ocean isn’t rising where I live. How is it possible for the ocean to be rising in some places and not others? Louisiana has flooding because most of it is lower than sea level and they have had more rain than normal this year.

Our foundation puts on conferences and brings in scientists from around the world to discuss global warming. There has been no warming in 20 years and that is confirmed by NASA sattilites. The biggest lie is that 97% of scientists agree. Actually, it is the opposite. I’ve been to conferences with hundreds of scientists who disagree with the claim that man is causing global warming. CO2 is a little over 3% of what they call “greenhouse gases”. Of that 3% man contributes a little over 0.02%. One volcano eruption contributes 200 times that. It is the height of arrogance to think man could destroy what God created. We couldn’t if we tried. We exploded numerous atom bombs that put hundreds of times more CO2 in the atmosphere than man has in his entire existence.

You may be willing to live in a dirtier, more dangerous, less free world to combat something that isn’t happening, but I’m NOT.

    • Gary Aminoff says:

JoAnn, what does this have to do with the activity of humans? As I said in a previous comment, human beings have little or no ability to affect climate change. Climate change is caused by solar activity, and I don’t think we humans are at the stage yet where we have the ability to control activity on the sun.

  6. And what should be noted is that none of the climate change computer models take the activity of the sun into consideration. Yes, the sun is the major influence on warming and cooling.

  7. JoAnn says:

With all my heart, I truly feel sorry for you people. Ignoring proven science is something one cannot and must not deny.

    • Gary Aminoff says:

JoAnn, I feel sorry for you. You believe that proven science shows that human beings cause climate change. It does no such thing. I don’t deny that climate changes. The earth warms and the earth cools. What I deny, and what science has in no way proven, it is that global warming or cooling is caused to any significant degree by humans.

  8. JoAnn, if you think it has been proven, it is you who is misinformed.
